I am pleased to welcome Rory McDonald, PhD, MBA of the Harvard Business School as this year's Keynote Speaker. Professor McDonald is an expert on Disruptive Innovation and an authority on Competition and Innovation in Technology Enabled Markets. His presentation will take place at 11:15 AM on Thursday, 29 May.

Some additional meeting highlights are:

The "Simulation-Based Training Program for Young Surgeons", under the direction of Dr James Fann (Stanford University), Dr. Hiran Fernando (Boston Medical Center), and Dr. Daniel Miller (WellStar Healthcare System), will take place on Wednesday, 28 May, at the Marriott Copley Place. The six (6) hours of simulation training will cover:

• OPCAB/CABG
• Mini-mitral surgery
• Aortic valve replacement
• Transcatheter valve replacement
• Robotic surgery
• Atrial fibrillation
• Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery
• Chest wall reconstruction
• Novel esophageal therapies

The highly anticipated Debate on All Arterial OP-CAB Versus Hybrid Revascularization between ISMICS Past President Dr. John D. Puskas of Mount Sinai Beth Israel and Dr. Andrew C. Eisenhauer, Director, Interventional Cardiovascular Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital will take place on Saturday, 31 May.

An App will be available for both Apple and Android based smart phones with the program of the 2014 ISMICS Annual Scientific Meeting. This interactive guide to the meeting is launching next week so be sure to watch your inbox for more information and download instructions.

Throughout the meeting we will be seeking your feedback via a text based Audience Response System on some critical questions such as the future publication platform(s) for our journal Innovations as well as topics for future Consensus Statement Conferences.

INNOVATIONS, the official journal of ISMICS, has continued to grow along with ISMICS. This year, ISMICS will again be presenting cash awards for the best manuscripts submitted from papers selected for presentation. There is a $2,000 award for the Best Manuscript submitted before the Annual Meeting and a $1,000 award for the Best Manuscript submitted within 60 days after the Annual Meeting. The recipients of the best manuscripts submitted for the 2013 ISMICS Annual Scientific Meeting will be announced during our Attendee Reception at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.

The International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery (ISMICS) was formed in 1997 to enhance, promote and support research and education in, and related to, the field of minimally invasive cardiac surgery. In 2004 the Society expanded its scope and mission to include research and education in minimally invasive thoracic surgery.

ISMICS is helping shape the future of less invasive cardiac and thoracic surgery on a global basis. The mission of the Society is to lead and promote innovation and technological advancement in cardiothoracic and cardiovascular surgery through scientific analysis and education. The Society has over 800 international members which include Active, Candidate, Honorary, Allied Health Professional and Senior members. ISMICS is governed by a Board of Directors which meets three times a year and INNOVATIONS, which is MEDLINE indexed, is its official journal.

ISMICS created the Research and Education Fund, formerly the Leadership Fund, in 2006 to fund the Presidents' Awards at the ISMICS Annual Meetings and Winter Workshops.
