Annual Awards

Best Paper Award

The Best Paper Award is provided to those who submit their manuscripts to Innovations, the official journal of ISMICS, from their presentations that take place at the ISMICS Annual Meetings. There are two awards given each year, those who submit their manuscript according to the deadline set prior to the Annual Meeting and those who submit after the deadline, but before the last day of the Annual Meeting.

Cardiac Robotic Young Investigator Award

This annual award is granted by ISMICS through a generous donation by a grateful patient from the Robotic Cardiac Surgery Program at the University of Chicago Medicine in an effort to support robotic cardiac surgical research and training worldwide. The best abstract related to robotic cardiac surgery will be chosen and announced at the annual ISMICS meeting. The author will receive a $3,000 award which will be used to cover travel expenses to the ISMICS meeting as well as a visit to the Robotic Cardiac Surgery Program at the University of Chicago Medicine for a week long traveling fellowship for case observation and training within a year after the annual meeting.

After this visit the recipient will provide ISMICS leadership with a correspondence summary of their educational experience and progress.

Chitwood Educational Travel Awards

The Chitwood Scholarship will offer attendance opportunities to select Turkish residents and students.

The Gründeman Scientific Research Award

The Gründeman Scientific Research Award is granted for demonstration of basic research or an early clinical concept that outlines a new innovation suited to Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery (MICS). Research must show sound concept, its applicability to minimally invasive cardiothoracic surgery, meet a clinical need and show feasibility of introduction into clinical practice. The research may be in the area of new techniques for MICS or may facilitate the application of MICS with current procedures.

The first annual Gründeman Scientific Research Award was presented during the 2018 ISMICS Annual Scientific Meeting in Vancouver, Canada, and is available through a generous donation from Medtronic in honor of Paul F. Gründeman, MD, PhD, past Secretary of ISMICS.

Recipient is awarded $5,000 USD.

MICS Award

ISMICS, in partnership with Edwards Lifesciences, is pleased to announce a new Award Opportunity for young Cardiothoracic Surgeons, who are making their earliest presentations in minimally invasive cardiothoracic surgery (MICS). The eight finalists selected will be provided complimentary registration and a travel stipend to come to the ISMICS Annual Meeting and will compete in a live session presenting their “First Communication in MICS.”

The top three finalists will receive Travel Fellowship Awards to visit a leading MICS center and train with an ISMICS member for 2 to 3 weeks.

Annual Meeting ePoster Competition

Round One:
This peer-review session divides posters into topic groups, with several groups presenting concurrently. Presenters are limited to 3 minutes. Participants (authors, attendees, topic group moderator) score each poster presentation.

Round One finalists each awarded $500.00 USD and proceed to Round Two.

Round Two:
This session is conducted in the main Scientific Session Hall with authors using powerpoint slides to present their work to the entire audience. Presenters are again limited to 3 minutes. The topic group moderators score presentations from Round One to select the Best Moderated Poster.

Recipient is awarded $500.00 USD.
