ISMICS thanks Getinge Group USA for supporting the ISMICS 2016 Consensus Conference which addressed Endoscopic Vein & Radial Harvest. The ISMICS Expert Consensus Conferences have produced very important scientific results that have benefited all aspects of the minimally invasive specialty. The purpose of a Consensus Conference is to evaluate the available scientific information on a biomedical technology and to develop a consensus statement that advances understanding of the technology or issue in question (assessment) and that will be useful to health professionals and the public at large. A select and geographically diverse expert panel reviews the scientific data, weighs the information, and then composes a consensus statement that addresses a set of questions previously posed to the panel. This statement is an independent report of the panel.

ISMICS appreciates Getinge Group USA's continued support of its endeavors.

President's Message
Johannes Bonatti, MD, President
Johannes Bonatti, MD

Dear Members of ISMICS,

As the holiday season approaches, I am pleased to announce that ISMICS has had another very successful year in 2016. In addition to the Annual Scientific Meeting in Montreal, the Society also hosted the Annual Winter Workshop in Kyoto, Japan held 28-29 October. Chairman, Dr. Tohru Asai, and his team put together an outstanding program which was aimed at identifying the latest developments in cardiothoracic therapeutics while offering a hands-on and immersive educational experience. With over 300 professional attendees, this event undoubtedly contributed to furthering the knowledge of minimally invasive techniques within the specialty. Photos from this event are now available on the ISMICS website.

Looking ahead to 2017, ISMICS will continue to help drive innovation by co-sponsoring the Re-Evolution Summit, hosted by Debakey Institute for Cardiovascular Education and Training (DICET) in Houston, Texas, 6-7 April. We are also well underway with our plans for the 2017 Annual Scientific Meeting which will take place in beautiful and historic, Rome, Italy, 7-10 June. Program Co-chairs, Drs. Nikolaos Bonaros and Dr. Eric Lehr on the cardiac side and Drs. Ghulam Abbas and Farid Gharagozloo on the thoracic side, are putting together an excellent Program which is vital to the growth and value of our Society’s Annual Meeting.

A new offering for the 2017 annual meeting will be the "Subramanian Innovation Award" which awards a $5,000 grant to an ISMICS member with an innovation they would like to bring to reality. This award was created through a generous donation from ISMICS Past President and Founding Member, Dr. Valavanur A. Subramanian. I would like to extend my thanks to Dr. Subramanian for his continued support of ISMICS educational initiatives.

I am pleased to let you know that the ISMICS 2017 Winter Workshop will be held 8-9 December at the Rosewood Hotel and Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi Conference and Simulation Center in Abu Dhabi/United Arab Emirates. The Winter Workshop is held in conjunction with the Emirates Cardiac Society Working Group for Cardiac Surgery and I look forward to welcoming you to Abu Dhabi.

INNOVATIONS, the official publication of ISMICS, continues to be issued bi-monthly as a timely resource providing the latest and greatest technological developments and techniques in the field. INNOVATIONS, is Medline indexed and has been accepted by Thomson Reuters for indexing in the Emerging Sources Citation Index. I encourage ISMICS members, as leaders in the field, to continue submitting their work to the journal, as it is an excellent means to facilitate an international exchange of knowledge and expertise in this growing area of study within the specialty. Again, thank you to all those who contribute.

I greatly look forward to what 2017 has in store for ISMICS and am honored to have this opportunity as ISMICS President to help our Society lead and promote innovation and technological advancement in cardiothoracic and cardiovascular surgery. I hope to see many of you at the upcoming meetings this winter and wish you all a happy and healthy New Year.

Johannes Bonatti, MD
President
