President's Message
It is a privilege and honor to serve as the President of the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery (ISMICS) for the 2013-2014 year and to follow so many innovative leaders in the minimally invasive surgery field. I appreciate the support of the ISMICS membership and look forward to a successful year. We were proud to host this past year’s annual meeting in Prague, Czech Republic, which was the 16th Anniversary of the Society. The 2013 Annual Meeting had the second highest professional registration in ISMICS history with a total of 572 attendees. The Society now has 803 members representing almost every region of the world and we are continuing to grow. I would like to thank Dr. Alan Menkis for his successful term as president which culminated in an excellent annual meeting. ISMICS is on an extremely positive trajectory! There were 376 abstracts submitted for ISMICS 2014 which have been scored for our Program Committee Meeting this weekend. This is a record for the greatest number of abstracts submitted in ISMICS history! We owe a tremendous thanks to our Program Co Chairs [See: side panel] for their outstanding work thus far. With this historic number of abstracts and videos submitted, our Program Co Chairs have an incredible foundation to craft an exceptional program for ISMICS 2014 in Boston. Under the able leadership of Drs Thourani and Walther for the Cardiac component, we are planning many innovative enhancements in the educational experience. We have expanded the Thoracic component with Drs Fernando, Miller, dos Santos and Schmid serving as Co Chairs to offer an unparalleled conference on innovations in thoracic surgery. We have also made a significant change to “go big” with simulation training and education under the direction of Dr Jim Fann – both with a full day Masters Class for Young Surgeons as well as an expanded Sim City. Our 2014 Annual Scientific Meeting will be held 28-31 May 2014 at the Marriott Copley Place in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Please visit our website www.ismics.org to learn more. I am also pleased that the Society’s journal INNOVATIONS was accepted for Medline indexing, which is a major milestone for our Society. I strongly urge you to submit your manuscripts for publication in the journal, innovjournal.com. We have created an award for the Best Manuscripts submitted to INNOVATIONS for publication within 30 days of our annual meeting. I would like to recognize Dr. Ralph Damiano, the editor of INNOVATIONS, for his continued leadership.
