The ISMICS 2018 Consensus Conference will address "Defining the Optimal Approach to Lobectomy". The ISMICS Expert Consensus Conferences have produced very important scientific results that have benefited all aspects of the minimally invasive specialty. The purpose of a Consensus Conference is to evaluate the available scientific information on a biomedical technology and to develop a consensus statement that advances understanding of the technology or issue in question (assessment) and that will be useful to health professionals and the public at large. A select and geographically diverse expert panel reviews the scientific data, weighs the information, and then composes a consensus statement that addresses a set of questions previously posed to the panel. This statement is an independent report of the panel.

President's Message
Anson Cheung, MD, President
Anson Cheung, MD

Dear Members of ISMICS and Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that ISMICS had another very successful year in 2017. The 2017 Annual Scientific Meeting in Rome had a record attendance. We are well underway with our plans for the 2018 Annual Scientific Meeting which will take place in Vancouver, Canada, 13-16 June. Program Co-chairs, Drs. Joseph Lamelas and Rashmi Yadav on the cardiac side and Drs. Sebastien Gilbert and Giulia Veronesi on the thoracic side, are putting together an excellent Program which is vital to the growth and value of our Society’s Annual Meeting. I encourage you to submit your abstract to be considered for the 21st Annual Scientific Meeting.

I invite you to visit ISMICS at Booth #22 during the 31st EACTS Annual Meeting that will take place 7-11 October, 2017 in the Austria Center, Vienna Austria. We are also looking forward to the ISMICS Winter Workshop which will take place 8-9 December 2017 at the Rosewood Hotel and Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi Conference Center in Abu Dhabi/United Arab Emirates, in conjunction with the Emirates Cardiac Society Working Group for Cardiac Surgery. I look forward to the program put together by Dr. Johannes Bonatti and his team.

Looking ahead, ISMICS will continue to help drive innovation by co-sponsoring the 9th Re-Evolution Summit, 5-6 April 2018, at the Houston Methodist Research Institute in Houston, Texas.

In an effort to continue our global educational outreach, ISMICS was delighted to offer programming at the WSCTS Meeting in Astana, Kazakhstan and at the SISMICS Meeting in Shanghai last month. ISMICS Faculty participated in scientific sessions at both meetings.

INNOVATIONS, the official publication of ISMICS, continues to be issued bi-monthly as a timely resource providing the latest and greatest technological developments and techniques in the field. INNOVATIONS, is Medline indexed and has been accepted by Thomson Reuters for indexing in the Emerging Sources Citation Index. I encourage ISMICS members, as leaders in the field, to continue submitting their work to the journal, as it is an excellent means to facilitate an international exchange of knowledge and expertise in this growing area of study within the specialty. Again, thank you to all those who contribute.

The first annual Subramanian Innovation Award was presented during the 2017 ISMICS Annual Scientific Meeting in Rome to Muralidhar Padala, PhD of Emory University. The “Subramanian Innovation Award” which awards a $5,000 grant to an ISMICS member, was created through a generous donation from ISMICS Past President and Founding Member, Dr. Valavanur A. Subramanian. I would like to extend my thanks to Dr. Subramanian for his continued support of ISMICS educational initiatives.

I greatly look forward to what 2018 has in store for ISMICS and am honored to have this opportunity as ISMICS President to help our Society lead and promote innovation and technological advancement in cardiothoracic and cardiovascular surgery. I hope to see many of you at the upcoming meetings this fall and in 2018.

Anson Cheung, MD
President
